Dr. Kurt Campbell (who is currently serving as US Deputy Secretary of State) was interviewed by Adil Cader on the Biden administration’s approach to engagement in the Indo-Pacific region. The interview, held in June 2023, coincided with Dr. Campbell’s role as the White House Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific and was a collaborative effort between Talking Foreign Affairs and the UWA Defence and Security Institute. Dr. Campbell’s perspectives illuminated crucial aspects of US foreign policy, offering valuable insights into the strategic vision guiding American involvement in the Indo-Pacific. Notably, his role in the establishment of regional frameworks such as The QUAD and AUKUS, as well as his instrumental contributions to the Quad Summit and meetings with leaders from Japan and Korea, underscored his significant impact on shaping US policies in the Asia-Pacific region. His historical influence was further evident during his tenure as the Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs, where he played a pivotal role in crafting the Obama administration’s policies, earning him credit as a key architect of the “pivot to Asia”.
